Off Stage

Staged portraits of famous Danes, seen through the camera lenses of six Danish art photographers. Many of the portraits are artists themselves, but here they are shown outside the scenes and spaces we usually know them from.

Off Stage partly shows how differently art photographers can approach a portrayal task, and partly it gives new angles on the public visual and interpretive image of a number of well-known Danish actors. The four Danish art photographers are:

Søren Solkær (b. 1969) draws inspiration from the world of film and painting in his portraits, and his work is in the field of tension between intimacy and visual nerve. A high degree of staging and lighting are key characteristics of his photography style. For the past 25 years, Solkær has photographed every conceivable world artist from, for example, Paul McCartney over Björk to Amy Winehouse.

Ole Christiansen (b. 1955) has for 40 years defined the classic, black and white art photographic portrait. O.C. is known for his covers for Euroman and record covers for bands such as Sort sol, TV2, Thomas Helmig and many others. His visual signature is unique and characterized by a very graphic appearance.

Jens Juul's (b. 1963) works are at the crossroads between art and reportage photography. His direct and extravagant personal descriptions are in harsh, black and white and grainy contrasts, which have no reservations, or try to beautify the person being photographed.

In recent years, Tune Andersen (b. 1958) has developed and refined his completely personal approach to portrait photography. In the heavily reworked and painted works, he unfolds his own visions, which are completed after the person portrayed has left the stage. Ambiguous, bittersweet or maybe downright diabolical.

Among those portrayed are: Pilou Asbæk, Linnea Voss, Claes Bang, Tommy Kenter, Mads Mikkelsen, Bodil Jørgensen, Nicolas Bro, Josephine Park, Ghita Nørby, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Sofie Gråbøl, Jytte Abildstrøm, Lotte Andersen and Esben Smed.

The approximately 40 works in "Off Stage" can be experienced at Art Centre Silkeborg Bad in the period 25 September - 12 December 2021.
